What is Homeopathy?
Homeopathy is a well-established way to treat illnesses. Instead of relying on drugs, homeopathic remedies use tiny amounts of naturally-occurring substances to deal with medical problems. The remedies are diluted many times, whilst being shaken to activate the ingredients. Homeopathy is safe and gentle and has no harmful side effects. And the amazing thing is, the more times the substance is diluted and shaken, the more powerful it gets! How’s that for weird science?
How does homeopathy work?
Homeopathy is based on the work of Samuel Hahnemann. He discovered that you can treat a set of symptoms by giving the patient a tiny amount of something that causes similar symptoms. In a way, this is close to how an inoculation works, except that homeopathy does not use live viruses.
What are homeopathic medicines made of?
Only natural substances are used in homeopathic medicines, which are called remedies. Many of the remedies are made from plants, although other substances, such as charcoal and egg shells are also used. The substance is diluted and shaken over and over again in a mixture of alcohol and water.
How can I be sure that the remedies are safe?
Because the remedies are diluted so many times, you can be sure that they are safe to take. In fact, the remedies are often diluted so much that (at the moment) no scientific equipment can detect any of the original substance in the liquid. It is the energy pattern of the substance, held within the mixture, that has a healing effect.
Isn't it true that homeopathy is a placebo?
Definitely not! Some people cannot accept that such small amounts of a substance can have any benefit. They claim that patients get better simply because they believe that the remedy will help them. (This is the ‘placebo effect’.) But homeopathy has been used successfully on babies, animals and even plants. None of these were able to understand that they were being given a remedy, so the placebo effect was impossible.
Are homeopathic remedies easy to take?
Very easy! The remedies are usually given as tiny, circular pills (called pillules), soft tablets or powders, which all taste of sugar. You just put them in your mouth and let them dissolve. Alternatively, the remedies can also be given in liquid form, in a mixture of alcohol and water. You only need one or two drops, so you won’t get drunk!
